6 Ways To Wake Up in a Good Mood

Posted on by Beth Gross

Waking up happy…it’s a simple thing.  But many people can’t do it.  They wake up to problems that need solving, lists to complete, people to argue with. They’re in a bad mood as soon as the alarm goes off. So how can this situation be changed?

One way is to make sure you get a good night’s rest.

1. Go to bed earlier

I know, I know, I can’t do it either. But most studies say that the earlier you go to sleep, the better you feel in the morning.  Guess Ben Franklin was right. Even if you can’t get all the daily tasks done by bedtime, be consistent with your sleep schedule.  Sleeping in on your days off does not result in “catching up” on sleep.

2. Keep it cool

A hot bedroom is not a good environment for sleep.  Ever wake up at 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. and not know why? Being sweaty is uncomfortable even if you’re not fully conscious of it. Crack a window or turn on a fan. In the winter, use an extra blanket or heavier sleepwear, but leave the air a bit chilly.

3. Think lovely thoughts.

Follow Peter Pan’s advice.  Think happy thoughts as you drift off, and they will stay with you until morning. (Makes for a great dreamlife, too) Or spend some time in meditation. Calm your mind and your sleep will be more restful.

Another way to be bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning is to wake up well.

4. Let the sun shine

Wake up to sunlight streaming in your window. If you can’t bear moonlight when you sleep, be sure to open up the curtains as soon as you get out of bed.  Light brightens your mind as well as your day.

5. Get up! Get up!

When the alarm rings, don’t give in to temptation and hit the snooze button. Shut it off and get out of bed. This may take some practice. If I have to be somewhere at a certain time (like work) I use 2 different alarms to make sure I don’t fall back asleep.

6. Get a move on

Exercise is good for soul…and for the tired body. Touch your toes, stretch your arms up or march in place, anything to get the creaks out will work. I know some people who do a few leg lifts before they even get out of bed

A good morning is a wonderful thing.
